About

Course Description

The role of grooming and sexual exploitation/trafficking is a growing problem affecting our youth and putting those most vulnerable (i.e., those fleeing war) at risk of being trafficked. This presentation will explore the challenges of treating clients who have been groomed, exploited, and/or trafficked. The impact of grooming on client disclosure will be addressed with real case examples to illustrate how for some clients, the emotional bond between an abuser and survivor may impact their willingness to see their experiences as 'traumatic'. This has an impact on therapists, expecting to treat clients of grooming and/or sexual exploitation with EMDR for 'trauma'. Knowing where clients are in the grooming cycle helps the therapist to know where to begin and which wounds need addressing first.

Recognize the origin of grooming, exploitation, and/or trafficking helps to create a collaborative treatment plan which places the client at the heart of the process, handing them back the control and power stolen from them in the process of being groomed, exploited or / and trafficked. This presentation is for therapists working with clients who have been (or are currently being) groomed, sexually exploited or / and trafficked.

*Disclaimer: Please note this video contains difficult subject matters related to trauma.
