About

Course Description

19%- 25% of our population have a disability making it one of the largest minority communities. Person's with a disability are 2-4 times more likely to experience trauma than the general population. Statistically, persons with a disability are 2 to 4 times more likely to die or sustain a critical injury during a disaster or global events such as the pandemic. Yet we hear very little about this community and lack trainings that teach us about this culture and how to bring trauma treatments such as EMDR to this community. Like trauma many disabilities are not visible thus take on the notion that they don't exist or are not a problem. One of the wonderful things about EMDR is that it’s not prejudiced as it knows we all have the same brain and it capitalizes on its flexibility (Cross Model Plasticity). This makes EMDR an accessible psychotherapy for all. Via handouts, PowerPoint slides, didactic/discussion and client videos, this workshop will compare the similarities in how we define trauma and disability, review the Adaptive Information Processing Model (AIP) as it relates to persons who have a disability, become familiar with cultural terminology, and explore the many ways we can bring phases 1-8 of EMDR to folks. We will round out our time with a video of clients offering their wisdom to therapists followed by a group discussion.
