Course Outline

To Present a Cross Training Model of Comprehensive EMDR Treatment of Complex Trauma (CT).

  • Therapists will learn how to provide an extended preparation phase to allow CT clients to utilize EMDR therapy safely and provide interventions and skills training to help clients manage their emotional responses in therapy as well as in life.
  • Therapists will be able to create enough safety and orientation to the present, so that the client can maintain dual attention and not dissociate during the processing phase of EMDR.
  •  Therapists will learn the specific methods of maintaining emotional safety while accessing post-traumatic material.
  •  Therapists extend the scope of treatment beyond trauma resolution to deal with the extensive life issues faced by clients with complex trauma disorders.

Learning Objectives

Identify three different ways of targeting and resolving avoidance defenses, and how these targeting methods may be modified for clients with dissociative personality structures.
Describe the "Loving Eyes" method, which is an alternative to the EMDR Assessment Phase (EMDR Phase 3), for some clients with Complex PTSD and dissociative personality structure.
Describe the Back-of-the-Head Scale, a means of assessing, moment to moment, within the therapy session, the degree to which a client is oriented to present safety.
Describe the Constant Installation of Present Orientation and Safety (CIPOS) method. The purposes of the CIPOS method are 1) to teach the valuable skill of “state change,” the ability to shift from a “trauma reliving” state to a “safe, oriented-to-the-present” state; and 2) to safely facilitate trauma processing in clients who are highly vulnerable to dissociative abreaction.
